Axair Athletes Overcome Running Battle

RBChester20153Our Business Development Manager, Rob Burn, and Marketing Manager, Fabien Carbonell, recently participated in the 2014 Chester Marathon & Metric Marathon.

Both are extremely keen runners and pound the pavements, week in, week out, often training together and spurring each other on to resist the temptations of a Friday trip to the fish and chip shop or one too many biscuits with their morning coffee.

As if the prospect of competing in a marathon wasn’t challenging enough though, both Rob and Fabien had to overcome personal battles to even make it to the starting line. Rob had suffered a very harsh cold in the week preceding the race, a rare occurrence for the man who regularly has a spinach smoothie for breakfast. Rob faced the cold head on, sweating it out, by training in two tracksuits and a bin bag!

Fabien meanwhile had been suffering with an ankle injury since running the Normandy marathon in June. This had restricted Fabien’s training regime though he did compensate for this by enduring a 20 mile a day bike ride, to and from the Axair office, for a number of weeks. Even so, he had managed very little running in the lead up to Chester.

Despite these struggles, both of them would make it to the starting line and put in very decent performances. Rob finished the full marathon in an impressive 2:56:53, ranking 70th overall and 2nd in the Male Veteran 50 category.  Fabien finished the Metric Marathon (16.2 miles) in 2:10:54, ranking 85th overall and 17th in the Male Veteran 40 category,

Fabien summed up his race, saying:  “Even though it was not a full marathon, I was very pleased with the race; I started well and found it easier than expected. My injury meant that I had to take it easy with my training so I was really happy with my performance.”

Rob was less satisfied, calling the race “a nightmare” and described his genuine discomfort from the start to the finish. Rob ran the race in an Axair sponsored vest and he did make a defiant pledge about his next race “Next time I wear that vest I will blow them away!” Watch this space.
