Corrosion Resistant ATEX Fans used for the Reduction of Waste Gases in Sulphur Recovery Units

Explosion proof fans are critical components for sulphur recovery units within oil and gas refineries. Integrated fans must be suitable to withstand extreme temperatures and provide protection against elevated levels of corrosion including high temperature corrosion, dew point corrosion, acid corrosion and stress corrosion.

Environmental legislation limits the release of SO2 emissions and environmental pollution; therefore, oil refineries are expected to recover between 95% – 99.99% of sulphur. Sulphur recovery units are designed to run alongside the industrial production process (whatever that is e.g., oil refineries etc), to recover the sulphur produces and to reduce the waste gas emissions into atmosphere.

During the sulphur recovery process, hydrogen sulphide (H2S) found in crude oil during the acid gas removal (AGR) process, is sent to a sulphur recovery unit (SRU) where it is converted to sulphur. Hydrogen sulphide has a potent rotten smell and is extremely dangerous in larger concentrations. A sizeable portion of the hydrogen sulphide is burnt in a furnace chamber forming sulphur dioxide (SO2). As the hydrogen sulphide reacts with the sulphur dioxide it forms elemental sulphur (Sx).

To achieve a high sulphur recovery rate, it is important that the industrial fan supplies an adequate and consistent flow of primary air to the furnace reactor to enhance combustion. Insufficient air will limit the combustion process. Any unrecovered sulphur is transported via pipelines to a tail gas treating unit (TGTU) which is a thermal incineration unit. During this stage integrated combustion fans provide sufficient airflow to initiate a degassing process to clean the gas before it can be shipped out as product. This is a crucial final stage to ensure sulphur emissions are kept to a minimum, in line with the previously mentioned, environmental legislation.

Industrial fans are heavily relied upon in this industry, air is a crucial ingredient in many industrial processes. ATEX rated fans are chosen to reduce the risk of an explosion during the handling of highly flammable materials. Suitable fans provide a high resistance to corrosive gases and vapours to ensure safe, consistent operation and a long service life. ATEX stainless steel fans are designed to handle elevated temperatures, provide high corrosive resistance, and offer explosion protection to areas with a hazardous area classification up to zone 1.
