Shipyard LEV Systems

LEV Systems ShipyardsLocal Exhaust Ventilation, or LEV, is a recommended method of shipyard ventilation. The nature of the shipbuilding industry means that air quality can be poor due to the presence hazardous chemicals, dust and welding fumes. To ensure workers are not exposed to these potentially harmful substances in often confined working spaces, LEV systems are key. LEV involves trapping airborne contaminants at their source before they pollute the air that is breathed by workers. For welding, cutting and heating processes, this type of ventilation must consist of freely movable hoods placed by the welder or burner as close as possible to where the work is being performed. LEV is based on the principle that air moves from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure. The difference in pressure is created by a powerful industrial fan that draws air through the ventilation system. Toxic air and particulate are either passed to the atmosphere or filtered away from the working area. We supply a range of polypropylene fans suitable for extracting from LEV systems. The range consists of the ST fan and also higher speed S fans. These can overcome higher resistances caused by extract arms and filters as a part of an LEV system for applications handling corrosive air. Flexibility of design and application is an important part of the service Axair Fans offer. The range of polypropylene fan components held in stock allows them to fulfil many of our customers’ requirements on a short lead time. The ST and S fan ranges can be assembled to suit motor requirements, discharge and handing positions and various mounting arrangements. Motors are available in single phase or three phase. Axair’s range of accessories can be used to make the installation easier, for example, with different types of connectors. Inverters can be used to allow speed control or to work with sensors fitted in the system. Both ranges can be offered with metal pedestals for indoor applications, metal pedestals with a motor cover for outdoor applications or the conventional weather pedestal which fully covers the fan motor. Some sizes within the range can be mounted on the fan’s inlet without a pedestal. This depends on the size of motor fitted to the fan.
