UV Photocatalytic Technology

UV photocatalytic technology has been thoroughly investigated as a highly effective mean of disinfection or sterilisation. Photocatalysis devices have many advantages compared to other technologies, including the ability to capture and destroy complex mixtures of different pollutants simultaneously, being relatively cheap, and easy to maintain and operate.

UV photocatalytic technology mimics the natural process of photosynthesis, by accelerating a photoreaction through the action of light on a catalyst. The Kleenfan disinfection devices have a long-life LED with UV-A rays that act on the titanium dioxide inside the device. This generates Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) that cause advanced oxidation processes (AOP), deactivating a wide range of pathogenic microorganisms (viruses and bacteria) and removing any bad odours from the room.

The photocatalytic disinfectant technology has been tested effectively against formaldehydes, volatile organic compounds and particles by the Research Centre for Food Safety and Control (CRESCA) of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. The Kleenfan test results indicate a substantial improvement in air quality with just one pass through the fan, regardless of recirculation. They reflect a reduction efficiency of PM10, PM2.5 and PM1 airborne particles higher than 96% with a single circulation through the fan. Kleenfan reduces volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by more than 70%. Furthermore, this oxidizing technology is perfect for deodorization, with a reduction of more than 65% of formaldehyde, one of the main indicators for the elimination of odours.

It is a similar process with clean air filtration devices such as the Reintair Warrior which has a photocatalysis-UVC tower. The tower consists of a UV-C ultraviolet light lamp that gives off UVC irradiation reacting with the titanium dioxide (TiO2) which results in a reaction that changes harmful contaminants (bacteria, viruses and volatile organic compounds or VOC’s) into H2O, CO2  and detritus.
