Reciprocating compressors like those manufactured under the Cubigel brand are one of the most widely used compressor technologies suitable for refrigeration applications with very high cooling capacity requirements. They feature a piston and cylinder arrangement like a car engine. The refrigerant inside the cylinder gets compressed by the reciprocating motion of the piston. Each cylinder has a suction valve and discharge valve to distribute the gas to the condenser after compression. There are three types of reciprocating compressor; hermetic, semi hermetic and open.
A hermetic refrigeration compressor is one in which the electric motor and compressor are enclosed or sealed in a hermetically welded envelope and the motor is cooled by the refrigerant itself. Hermetically sealed compressors are airtight units that prevent the leakage of refrigerants and offer a compact, low noise, long life product that is easy to install and requires less maintenance.

The advanced design of Cubigel Compressors® Green Cooling ranges allows a remarkable efficiency improvement by becoming the most suitable component for a sustainable refrigeration application.
The compressors are suitable for Natural Refrigerants such as propane (R290) and isobutene (R600a), which have being introduced in commercial appliances, not only due to the replacement of HFCs refrigerants which have a high impact on the environment, but also because it is more efficient in terms of performance and applications energy consumption.
The Cubigel R&D team has strongly and successfully worked on an environmental alternative to obsolete refrigerants - with no direct effect on global warming - reducing the energy consumption by using natural refrigerants with no greenhouse effect (R290) and developing High Efficiency compressor ranges.
Propane (R290) has no direct contribution to global warming and when used in an application, its energy consumption is between 12 to 15% lower than a similar application with R404A. Additionally, propane has better dynamic behaviour showing a lower increase of energy consumption with increasing ambient temperatures.
R290 compressors offer a higher cooling capacity and COP, allowing energy-saving consumption with smaller displacement. The major environmental benefits are obtained combining the use of the R290 with the design criteria of our high efficiency range compressors. These compressor models, in their more advanced versions, can save up to 35% of energy when compared with standard efficiency series of R404A, thanks to very flexible asynchronous motors that can adjust to different energy consumption levels by connecting, or not, a permanent capacitor.
L & B Range
The Small L range is characterised by its advanced design, very compact and efficient. Working with R134a and R600a, with displacement ranging between 2.2 and 3.1 cc. The main applications that this range covers are small refrigerators and freezers.
The B range of reciprocating compressors from Cubigel, offers more displacement, from 2.2 to 6.5 cc for a wider type of applications, while keeping its compactness and efficiency. The range is available for models with R134a, R600a and R290, for applications such as water coolers, can / bottle coolers, small refrigerators and freezers.

S Range
The S models are the top-capacity range of Cubigel Compressors® that goes from 18.0 to 34.4 cc, with an optimised design to reduce vibration in R134a, R404A, R407c, R507, R22 refrigerants for applications like large freezers and refrigerators, supermarket refrigeration equipment, blast chillers and heat pumps among others.

U Range
The new U Range offers to the market the most efficient compressors in its series and it has been designed using the most advanced technologies to minimize the energy consumption while offering a high cooling capacity. Thanks to its new shell, more compact and rounded, the U range offers a very low noise level.
The U Ranges offers R290, R600a and R134a models for LBP and HMBP applications such as ice cream conservators, freezers or bottle coolers with a displacement from 4.5 to 10,7 cc.

P Range
Together with the L range, our P models are the most used models offering 3 levels of efficiency - Standard, High, Very High - using the optional run capacitor concept, and Variable Speed. Our P range offers a solution for all cooling applications such as refrigerators, freezers, bottle coolers, can coolers, ice cream freezers, vending machines, beer dispensers, soft drink dispensers, ice makers and heat pumps, among others with displacement from 12 to 18 cc in R134a, R404A, R600a, R290, R507, R22 refrigerants.

X Range
The X range performs with high reliability and efficiency, with displacements from 16.0 to 23.0 cc. Designed to work under heavy-duty conditions for applications such as large refrigerators and freezers, display cabinets, display islands, supermarket refrigeration equipment and blast chillers among others, working with refrigerants R134a, R404A, R290, R407C, R507, R22.

Variable Speed Compressors
Variable Speed offers the lowest applications' energy consumption by means of electronically self-adjusting the compressors speed to the appliance cooling needs, while improving COP up to 50%.
Commercial refrigeration manufacturers are focusing their efforts to produce more efficient applications in order to satisfy the needs of reducing operating costs of the refrigeration equipment installed in supermarkets, retail premises and restaurants, where saving energy has become a topic of the major concern.
Variable Speed Compressors are available for R134a with GLT99FSN in HMBP application model and for R290 with NPT12FSC (LBP) and NLT60FSN (HMBP). With these 2 last models, a major benefit has been obtained from the use of Natural Refrigerants: A better performance and the avoidance of contributing to global warming.
The accurate design of the application and the right selection of the components -such as efficient compressors, fan motors, greater insulation thickness of the cabinet walls, larger condensers, low consumption lighting - is the key to reducing the total energy consumption of the application. The compressor is one of the components with highest impact in terms of energy consumption in the appliance.
Variable Speed Compressors are the solution for obtaining the maximum energy reduction, basically because full compressor capacity is not always needed, so this technology dynamically adapts the compressor's cooling capacity to the appliance's needs by adopting electronically-controlled running speed, optimizing the system's performance.

The advanced design of Cubigels green cooling range is one of the most sustainable hermetic compressor offerings in the marketplace, allowing a substantial efficiency improvement over conventional models with reductions in energy consumption of up to 45% in refrigeration appliances. Consequently, delivering lower Co2 emissions into the atmosphere. The Green Cooling range benefits from high efficiency, natural refrigerants, and variable speed control options; the crucial benefit of reducing energy consumption by electronically controlling the motor.Â
The green cooling range improves the compressor COP between 20-30% when compared to standard ranges.
Major environmental benefits are obtained combining the use of R290 with the design criteria of high efficiency ranges. These more advanced compressor models can save up to 50% of energy compared with standard series of R404A thanks to its high efficiency mechanics, advanced motor winding design and the optional running capacitor concept.Â
The High Efficiency models reduce energy consumption of commercial refrigeration appliances between 10% and 30% with respect to standard ranges. Most High-Efficiency models are equipped with electric motors, designed with the "optional run capacitor" concept, that is, the compressor can work with or without a running capacitor (CSR/CSIR), offering the level of efficiency with the same compressor.
Natural refrigerants like propane (R290) and isobutene (R600a) are being gradually introduced in commercial appliances, not only due to the replacement of H-CFC’s and HFC’s refrigerants which have high impact on environment,
but also because it is more efficient in terms of performance and applications' energy consumption.
Refrigerant propane has no direct contribution to global warming and its energy consumption is between 15% to 20% lower than a similar application with R404A. The Cubigel Compressors® R290 compressors offer a higher cooling capacity and COP allowing energy-saving consumption with smaller displacement.
The Variable Speed Compressor offers the lowest energy consumption by means of electronically self- adjusting the compressor’s speed to the appliance’s cooling needs, while improving COP up to 40%.
Using Drop-in solution with communication capabilities, this compressor automatically achieves the best efficiency for the appliance while dynamically adapting the compressor’s speed to the needed cooling capacity.
RSIR (Resistance Start-Induction Run)
LST motor. No capacitors. Auxiliary winding is disconnected after start up. Standard energy efficiency.
CSIR (Capacitor Start-Induction Run)
HST motor. With starting capacitor. Auxiliary winding is disconnected after start up. Standard efficiency.
RSCR (Resistance Start-Capacitor Run)
LST motor. With running capacitor. Auxiliary winding remains connected after start up. Used for high efficiency in small capacity compressors (particularly in household refrigeration)
CSR (Capacitor Start and Run)
HST motor. Two capacitors (starting and running). Auxiliary winding remains connected after start up. Used for high efficiency in small compressors and for size reduced size motors in compressors
Current relay – (electromechanical). RSIR/CSIR motors and CSR low/medium-power motors with NTC (the NTC is connected in series with the starting capacitor and the main propose is to reduce the current peaks in the relay contacts)
Potential relay – (electromechanical). CSR high-power motors.Â
PTC – (Positive Temperature Coefficient), the resistance increases with the temperature. Device only with RSIR or RSCR motors in the Small L, B, L and P ranges.
NTC – (Negative Temperature Coefficient), the resistance decreases with the temperature.Used in some CSR in order to reduce dimensions and components.
LST – Low Starting Torque – Systems with capillary tube or balanced pressures at start up.
HST – High Starting Torque – Systems with expansion valve or capillary tube, with unbalanced pressures at start up.
